The short answer is no it’s not, if you’re anything like I was you’re probably brushing this off as no big deal. The truth is we all think we have a pretty good idea of who our customers are. Most of use only have an idea and most of that idea is surface obvious stuff.
If we really want to have a competitive advantage and sell way more stuff as a product owner or an affiliate it’s really necessary to understand your customers well. Eben Pagan says if you can explain your prospects problem better than them they assume you are the expert and will be falling over themselves to buy your product. So not only do you need to know what products they like, you also need to know the problems they’re having really well.
A successful online marketing friend of mine Jason Fladlien once said you need to know 3 problems your prospect is having and 3 things they want. Just knowing a hand full of problems and dreams most of your customers have will really get them thinking you know them and that you are talking to them, when this happens you’ve hooked them in and they want to buy from you.
Frank Kern in his famous ‘Core Influence’ presentation talks about his customer avatar being a middle aged man, slightly geeky for tech stuff and his wife thinks he’s crazy for trying this online thing. You know what I’m sure a ton of people are in that same situation.
The main benefit of having a clear customer avatar is that you can speak in your emails, sales letters, videos… and any other online marketing you do to that avatar because you have a representation of them in your mind.
